Center for Great Apes Director of Development POSITION and ORGANIZATION Position Director of Development Non-profit Organization Center for Great Apes Location P.O. Box 488 Wauchula, FL 33873 Mission of the Center for Great Apes The Center for Great Apes mission is to provide a permanent sanctuary in a safe and enriching environment for orangutans and chimpanzees in need of lifetime care. REPORTING STRUCTURE The Director of Development reports to the Managing Director and will also work closely with the President/Founder as well as with the Board’s Outreach and Public Investment Committee. BASIC FUNCTION The Director of Development is charged with the development, coordination, and implementation of a comprehensive and diversified resource development program. The Director of Development will sustain this program by establishing relationships with funding sources and individual donors as well as managing and enhancing successful grant funding work. Support for public relations and public events will also be part, as needed, of the basic function of the position. The challenge of this opportunity is to build upon the current base of support, while significantly expanding the donor base to enhance fundraising efforts. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The Director of Development is expected to develop and implement a broad-based, comprehensive fundraising program to include major individual gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation gifts. Additionally, she/he will assist with fundraising events, direct marketing activities, and public relations, as needed. Specific responsibilities include: Enhance existing and establish new programs designed to secure both short- and long-range fundraising for the Center, including both annual and capitol campaign fundraising needs. Assist with Board-building strategies and Committee success, and the identification and recruitment of additional governing Board members and other volunteer leadership. Participate in, guide, and provide support for the initiation of an auxiliary fundraising board of the Center for Great Apes Provide leadership and staff service to the governing Board in carrying out its fundraising responsibilities. Oversee all aspects of major gift cultivation and solicitation. Staff and accompany the President/Founder, the Managing Director, the Board members and other volunteers on solicitation calls, as needed. The Director of Development must also be capable of independently conducting major gift solicitations by her/him self. Prepare and/or oversee the preparation of proposals and reports for all individual, foundation, and corporate support. Further develop planned giving and other long-term fundraising plans. Develop and maintain an appropriate donor prospect research capability. Develop the capabilities of fundraising volunteers (and possibly staff) through training and mentoring. Develop further and maintain existing fundraising systems and recordkeeping procedures, through E-tapestry database, in order to track current and potential donors and acknowledge, report and record all gifts. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate must be a proven professional in fund development who has successfully led comprehensive annual and capital development programs. Experience in fund development may have been gained in any type of not-for-profit organization however, an interest in animals is essential. Possessing a high energy level and love for fundraising, the Director of Development must be a persuasive and articulate advocate for the Center. She/he also must be highly intelligent, innovative, proactive, and results-oriented. The successful candidate must possess strong management, planning and organizational skills to work effectively with a small, growing not-for-profit and with hardworking, and passionate colleagues. Personal characteristics of collaboration, integrity and honesty are a given in this team-oriented environment. Experience in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts is key, as are strong relationship-building, communication and motivational skills. Experience with the philanthropic community in central and west central Florida is ideal, but not mandatory. It is essential that this individual possess the style, stature, diplomatic and interpersonal skills to relate well to and to work effectively with all stakeholders. EDUCATION A Bachelor’s degree is required. A minimum of four years experience directing fundraising efforts, preferably for a non-profit, is required.
